Marine Scintillation

Marine Scintillation is an interactive data art application that presents an immersive visualization of interacting marine microorganisms. Animated particles that represent phytoplankton, zooplankton and dissolved oxygen are rendered into seawater. Viewers control a virtual camera focused on a micro scale, which can move vertically through the water column and above the ocean surface. Physical terrain features define the context of the Saanich Inlet, a small fjord north of Victoria, BC. Above the terrestrial surface are atmospheric representations that provide context of sun and moon phases as well as seasonal weather patterns. These dynamic elements compose a mesmerizing visualization of marine ecosystems.
